Sometimes, this kind of behavior is related to something else. They say it is harder to look into your soul than it is for a soldier to go to war! While I don't know the exact quote, it's important not to only rely on tones for the sake of fixing something.
To answer your question, if you are unfamiliar with BWE, you should stick with the same tone at the beginning. It takes some time before you can get the full effect of the tones. Actually, it really depends, some pick it faster than others (and some just don't).
I don't know for experienced users as I never intended to start a full scale practice. I guess you will have more benefits by trying to combine compatible tones.
